POWERbreathe
Breathing New Life into Performance Training with Birmingham University
For any sport and fitness research project, turning theory into a useable, testable product is key. And that is exactly how we helped Birmingham University’s Sport Science department.
Birmingham University’s Sport Science department is one of the top-rated in the UK. The School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences opened its doors to students in 1946 and is one of Europe’s longest established departments for scientific research into the healthy body.

The university had conducted research to suggest that lung capacity and sporting performance could be enhanced by exercising the lungs. But to fully test their hypothesis, they needed a physical product.
Following the department putting together a few mock-ups of prototypes, we were contacted to help to further design and develop the POWERbreathe. The handheld breathing device needed improved functionality, high consumer appeal and most importantly to have a thoughtful design for easy manufacture and assembly.
We quickly took the POWERbreathe from concept to full prototype, by working closely with the department to make sure the product was right at every stage. Our team produced multiple design ideas, created a suite of prototype tools and developed supplementary components for the product.
To help the university turn their research into a commercial business, we assisted with low volume production and assembly of the product.
The POWERbreathe has brought breathing training to the mainstream of sport and fitness and has gone on to win awards and recognition across the UK.
Along with the many benefits of the product for sports, fitness and training, the POWERbreathe has been proven to reduce asthma symptoms by up to 75% and offers a drug-free alternative to those who suffer with shortness of breath.
